Hello, I’m Kia Croom. You may know me as a fundraiser who’s raised $1 billion for social justice causes over 25 years. But my story goes deeper.
I grew up in East Oakland, shaped by the harsh realities of the “War on Drugs” and Reaganomics. My mother, struggling with substance abuse and mental health challenges, raised my sister and me in extreme poverty, leading to multiple instances of homelessness. These experiences left scars, and I developed a fiery temper and a criminal history at a young age.
In 1995, I left Oakland and eventually earned a degree in journalism from Clark Atlanta University. I went on to build a successful career in nonprofit fundraising, but my mental health struggled. Diagnosed with anxiety, depression, and racial trauma, I spent the last five years studying folk herbalism and ethnobotany to heal. I started formulating medicinal teas for challenges like insomnia, which led me to discover the healing power of plant medicine.
In 2023, I founded Itutu Apothecary & Tea Room to share that healing with others. Itutu, meaning “cool, unhurried, and unbothered” in Yoruba, embodies the peace, balance, and intention I strive for.
Today, I’m healthier than I’ve ever been. It’s my pleasure to invite you to join me on this journey of healing, growth, and living fully in Itutu.
Sleep is not a luxury, It's a necessity. I will prioritize getting enough sleep to be my absolute best.
I am extraordinary, but not superhuman. I give myself permission to put down the metaphorical cape and embrace rest, relaxation, and letting go.

I commit to cultivating a daily or weekly practice that brings me pure pleasure, nourishing my spirit.
